Well, the 52 spoilers are out, and (unsurprisingly) the Multiverse is back.
I dropped 52 about halfway through, as I just wasn’t getting into it. There were various plot threads I was really digging (Booster Gold’s plot, Supernova, Black Marvel Family), but the rest I couldn’t get into, and every week 52 was just dropping further and further down the pile. I think part of the problem was that with the various plot threads going on, I found myself continually stuck reading about characters, where I had no idea who they were, or why I should care about them. This series I definitely think required a fairly extensive working knowledge of Who’s Who in DC, and while I’m better than some, there’s still some big gaps in my knowledge. Reading DC is a strange feeling for me these days. While I’ve invariably ended up dissappointed with the big events (Infinite Crisis and its 4 prequels, 52), I’m still finding it an exciting time to be a DC fan.
I’m glad to see the multiverse back. Yes, it smacks of the silver age fanboyism that’s been in a lot of DC titles these days, but for the most part, these changes have been hugely enjoyable and well-written (Hal back as GL, Superman getting back his silver age Super-smarts etc). While most of my DC reading has been post-crisis, I’m still excited about the prospect of having back Earth-2, while also have the post-Crisis conceit of having the JSA and JLA on the same Earth. The explanation for how this all came to be works well for me too.
I just hope that the dialog changes in the Infinite Crisis hardcover mean that while characters like Alan Scott and Jay Garrick will stay on New Earth, duplicates who survived the original Crisis, like the Earth-2 Superman and Wonder Woman, will be brought back on their own Earth.
