Bit of a panic yesterday when a hardware failure knocked over the forums me and my mates use. Its all back up and running now, but minus the last week or so’s posts. It did make me stop and think though. I’ve never really bothered backing up any of my online stuff. Granted, my online stuff is largely for me to muck about with, but still, I’d be annoyed if I lost my blog or something (since its meant to be something I can read back through in a couple of years time).

The joys of Wordpress though, I found a nice, easy plugin which will automatically backup the MySQL databases and email me the backup. Easy :-) Now I just have to remember to backup the actual files now and again, so I’ve got a copy of any images or videos I attach to the blog.

Great minds think alike! I’ve been considering a similar solution for the forums, where a cron job would e-mail out regular backups.

I was actually thinking about asking for volunteers, so the cron job would give everyone a turn at receiving the backup. That way, we could take them more often without anyone’s e-mail getting too snowed under. If there were ever a failure, we could work out who had received the most recent one, and I could ask them to send it to me to restore. What do you think of that idea?

First thing’s first, though. I’ll have to see if I can get it working with just me, to begin with.

Well, you could definitely sign me up as someone willing to receive the backups.

Of course, you could always get a Gmail/Googlemail account and have it sent to there for archiving.

Good idea. Actually, since I use Gmail, there’s no reason why I couldn’t just have them sent to me, and just set up an automatic filter to file them away.

As it turns out, there’s a phpBB mod for this kind of thing, so I’ll probably install it soon. It’s beta, but has been developed for over a year, so it should be better than anything I’d produce within the space of a few minutes!
