Mr HydeWell, Jekyll finished on Saturday, and what a cracking series its been. The central premise of Dr Tom Jackman managing an uneasy truce and living arrangement with his alter-ego was a great hook, and the various mysteries that followed through the series were captivating. Stephen Moffat’s writing shone as usual, with brilliant one-liners, and possibly the only time I’ve actually liked the Crazy Frog ringtone.

I’ve never really seen James Nesbitt in anything other than a Yellow Pages advert before, but he was great in this. Successfully taking Mr Hyde beyond “the monster” everyone associates the character with.

Its out on DVD today. I’ll probably be nabbing it myself and can’t recommend it highly enough.

Green Lantern Corps #14Ever since The Sinestro Corps one-shot came out, its been selling like hotcakes. So far the one-shot has sold out 3 different print runs, with the second part of the Sinestro Corps War (Green Lantern #21) apparently selling out as well.

Well, it was a first for me yesterday, as I dropped by Forbidden Planet to get this week’s part, Green Lantern Corps #14. I got the last copy on the shelves. I’ve never really seen something sell out like that before, even Infinite Crisis or Civil War (although, granted they probably ordered more copies of those). Its really nice to see the Green Lantern franchise doing so well. DC’s campaign to make it their 4th big franchise (behind Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) seems to be working.

Geoff Johns has also re-iterated that this story arc is only the second part of a plan that started with Green Lantern Rebirth. Lord knows what he’s got up his sleeves, but I bet the ending of this war isn’t going to be too conclusive (if nothing else, The Sinestro Corps is too good an idea to dispense with this soon).

Well, I10 Invasion is now live. I logged in to check it tonight, and good Lord! If the lag is anything to go by, its definitely got a few people back playing the game.

Still, its a really good piece of work. I managed to nab a video of me checking out a Dropship attacking Skyway. Once again Hyper-phase earns its keep. I’m going to miss that temp-power.

I’ve been thinking about the comments on this blog (and indeed blogs in general), and what I’ve noticed is that, when you leave a comment, you never get updated via email when the comment is replied to. Instead you have to check back at the blog to see if there are any new comments.

I’m thinking of tracking down a plugin which would add this email functionality, so my question is this:

Would getting emailed when new comments are added to a post that you’ve commented on, be a good idea, or just a pain-in-the-neck?

Captain CometThere’s an interesting trend in DC Comics at the moment. I’ve noticed that a number of classic heroes are having their names stripped of any kind of military rank. Captain Comet (above) is now just Comet (which doesn’t sound as good), Captain Marvel is now calling himself Marvel (again, doesn’t sound quite as good) and Commander Steel is now Citizen Steel (although in fairness, its a new guy in the suit, and Citizen Steel still sounds good).

There seems to be some consistency in “ranks” being dropped from character names, and I have to wonder why. Most of these characters have had these names for decades, and at least some of the names sound worse without them. Is this trying to not cause offense to the military in this time of war? If so, I can’t help but feel its an over-reaction.

At least Marvel don’t seem to have fallen foul to the same thing from what I’ve seen.

BumblebeeWell I made it out to see the new Transformers movie last night. Top film.

Being a Michael Bay film, I did expect the action to be top-notch, and I wasn’t disappointed. The CGI effects for the Transformers themselves were excellent done and Shia LaBeouf did a great job as Sam Witwickey making the character likable and displaying some great comic timing.

The one thing that really surprised me was the amount of humour in the film. One scene in particular was completely goofy, and there were plenty of laughs to be had from Frenzy running around the place manically. But the humour worked really well. I was in stitches as the Autobots were trying to hide to avoid Sam’s parents.

Definitely one to go and see. Easily one of the best films of the summer so far. After a slightly disappointing start to the summer, this, Die Hard 4.0 and Harry Potter 5 have really improved things.

Had a great day out playing Paintball on Saturday. The morning was a bit of a write-off. The full-head safety masks, while protecting my noggin from the oh-so-sore headshots, also resulted in a lot of sweat, which completely knackered my visibility. Which wasn’t much use when I was trying to spot people crawling through the undergrowth.

The afternoon was a lot better though. The game areas were more open, so you could actually see where people were to shoot at them, while there was still plenty of cover.

I’ve hurt like heck the last two days though. Some sod shot me in the shoulder blade at close range, which has come up in a fairly spectacular bruise, but other than that, its the general joint and muscle pains, which are to be expected.

I’ve been talking to a friend a lot about creating a hero to reflect the fact I’ve been playing City of Heroes ever since Issue 1. So I finally got around to it tonight.

The I1 Veteran

For the name, I went with The I1 Veteran for obvious reasons. I decided I wanted a grizzled, Nick Fury-esque feel to the character (hence the eye-patch really), and since the various faction logos are one of the later veteran rewards, I thought I’d get some use out of them by making him a member of the Paragon PD, with their logo on his flack jacket.

He’s an Invulnerable/Axe Tanker, although his character description just describes his powers as being “hard as nails”. I always find playing Tankers a bit more challenging, since my natural playstyle is for ranged, blaster-type characters.

Too Many Linux Distros Make For Open Source Mess - Wolfe’s Den Blog - InformationWeek

I wonder how many of those actually get used by a reasonable number of people. I suspect the list of “main distributions” is probably only about 10-15. However, this kind of thing really doesn’t help convince people to pick up Linux.

Its this kind of thing that made me really like all the publicity Ubuntu was getting a couple of months ago. Playing up desktop-oriented distributions in the media is what’ll help, rather than confusing people.
