So it was officially announced today that Donna is returning as a full-time companion next year.
I’m a bit dubious about this myself. Concerns about Catherine Tate’s “shouty” acting from the Christmas special aside, its a bit of a step backwards for the show. Its one thing to revisit Sarah Jane years later, or to bring back Captain Jack (since we’d been told at the time he’d be back), but I thought the ending of The Runaway Bride was quite powerful. Finally, a companion had knocked back the chance to travel with the Doctor full time, as he and his lifestyle was too dangerous. That’s up in the air now.
Plus I loved Martha as a companion. Granted she’ll be back in the second half of season 4 (although I don’t believe we know how many episodes that’ll account for), but I’d hate to think she’s been shunted to the side to make way for a bigger name.

Agreed, I’m unconvinced about Catherine Tate. I’ve never been a fan - although I did like her Comic Relief sketches with David Tennant and Tony Blair.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how she turns out!
Indeed. There was a lot of shouting during The Runaway Bride which I wasn’t sure about. But in fairness, it was a Christmas run-around adventure, so I’m hoping we’ll see a subtly altered Donna come Season 4.
Certainly, going by a lot of the reaction I’ve read today, the first episode of season 4 is going to have its work cut out. Especially in light of Martha’s storming début this year.
Indeed, I know fandom wasn’t as keen on martha but I liked a companion that wasn’t content to be second fiddle to the doctor. I liked martha.
Also hope they don’t branch into the 2 companions route for too long if we have both Donna and Martha as companions, Interesting comments from the guy who played Turlogh (One of Peter Davison’s companions) he felt the doctor was always better with 1 companion, as any more took focus off the relationship between the doctor and companion (And he shoudl know, when he was there the doctor had 3 companions)
[...] heart-breaking. She’s been the best companion out of the entire 4 seasons without doubt (oh, how I’ve changed my tune) so it was incredibly sad that she was the one who suffered the “everlasting death” [...]
