Baldur's GateWhen I was originally into Linux (say around 1998/1999) one of the things that kept coming up was running Wine to get some Windows applications running. I tried it a couple of times, but it really wasn’t for the faint-hearted.

However, seeing talk of people running games on it the other day got me to thinking how much had it improved over the last 9 or so years?

Quite a lot is the answer. I booted up Synaptec, searched for Wine and installed it. From there it was an easy matter of putting my Baldur’s Gate disc into the drive, and running the autorun.exe from the Wine Explorer window. It installed no problem, and ran fine as well. Only tweaking required was to set the size of the Wine Desktop (rather than run fullscreen), and set the sound to use Alsa. All done through a config GUI.

I’m well impressed I must admit.

I love Wine, it runs very well on Ubuntu, (easiest to get on Elive though, as it is preinstalled).

The only program I really want to work on Wine, and doesn’t yet, is Windows Live Messenger

Not used Elive I must admit. One for me to check out :)

I’ve been really enjoying using a debian-based distro for a change though. The apt package management is sooooo much easier than the RPM distributions I’d used previously.

I’m a big fan of Windows Live Messenger as well. Never really clicked with any of the others, but in Linux I’ve been using Gaim (now Pidgen) and Kopete which seem pretty nice.

Yep, I love debian-based distros. Elive is also debian based, but there is one thing I must point out about it. Elive uses the meaning of Free Software as in freedom of use, rather than free of charge. To download the ISO, you have to pay a fee. However, once the fee has been paid, you can redistribute, copy, and install as you please. Which means other people have made the ISO available for download, free of charge. =]

Below is where I downloaded mine from. This is the latest version of Elive, and the ISO works without any errors. Elive checks the disc itself for errors before installing anyway, so if any errors were made during burning, it will not trouble your installed copy.

Elive is very different from other Distros, as it uses the Enlightenment window manager. The disc includes two versions of Enlightenment. The (default) V17, which is the best in my opinion, and has much eyecandy without slowing of system speed, although is unfinished. Although after seven months of use, I only encountered one problem with it, and the OS can be reset in a similar way to the Windows Mobile OS. If for whatever reason you do encounter difficulties, V16 (which is not as nice) is also included, and can be changed to if you wait a while on the logon screen.

The one thing I adore about Elive, is that, unlike every Linux distro I’ve ever used, (including Ubuntu) it has a battery monitor what actually works with my laptop battery =D

    Oh, and it’s a LiveCD. =]

And there are two main themes, a day one and a night one.
    Choose the day one.
    Trust me.
    The night one feels clunky.

Excellent, I’ll get that downloaded tonight. I must admit, I love the LiveCDs. Its great being able to try out a new distro without needing a free PC to wipe.

The other thing I played with which was a lot of fun were the Pendrive Linux distributions. They’re a cracking idea. I picked up a 2Gb flashdrive cheap from dabs, and then was able to muck around with Ubuntu, DSL etc without mucking up my PC. Great idea.

Tell me about it. I love Pendrive Linux distros, like Damn Small Linux, etc.
What I want to do, is buy one of those watches, which contain flash memory, and have an openable flap in the side revealing a USB plug and fold out cord. (you can get MP3 Player ones too)
As then I can install Damn Small or another Pendrive Linux distro on it.

    Linux.
    In a watch.

    I want.

    xD
