iPod Touch 2Remember people, Apple are the nice, friendly computer company. Not like that nasty Microsoft.

So, Apple have followed through on their threat to kill any iPhones hacked to work on other networks. God forbid their customers should get a choice in their provider. If they’re willing to sacrifice functionality in order to choose their own provider, then why not let them?

Of course, the really worrying thing about this update are the stories of non-hacked iPhones being killed as well. Not to mention the stories of the update adding extra encryption to the iPhone which prevents 3rd party software.

    Better now, drank some water.

I reckon apple’s next move will be to have their updates blow up hardware that’s been hacked in any way. After all, you could still pretend you had a pretty working iPhone.

There are some interesting arguments going on from this. Basically, if you buy the phone, should apple be able to disable it? Is it not yours to do with as you please? If I buy a Ford, and ford have a deal with shell, can ford send a signal to fry my engine if I buy petrol at Morrisons? Or if I fit Oz alloys and a thumpin Bose stereo for when I’m crusin.

You’re raising a good argument for Ford being able to fry engines in my book ;-)

I love this quote from this ZDNet blog:

“If I was working over at Apple’s PR department, I think I’d call in sick today. In fact, I think I’d fake something really serious like Ebola or bird flu and try to get the week off, because the brown stuff has hit the fan head on over the bricked iPhones and cleaning up this mess is going to be tricky. ”

To be honest, I was never going to buy one anyway. They’re too pricey, and being locked into their mobile operator isn’t appealing. They basically seem to be punishing the diehard Apple fans and gadget-freaks by doing this, and that’s their core market for the iPhone (unlike the iPod which has broader appeal).

Well neither was I. Frankly its not a great phone, has a control system that is only shared by a couple of phones out on teh market currently (But apple will still call it unique and call those (SUch as the LG Prada) that were out before it copies. Steve Jobs has Soviet style propoganda on his side.
