Well, Newsarama have got the January solicits up and there’s some good looking titles that month.
In Green Lantern terms we’ve got our first (albeit hard to make out clearly) look at an Alpha Lantern from the arc in the main title. I must admit, I’m intrigued to see how this arc goes. I’m betting the Alpha Lanterns are some Ion-derivative, but given that Hal and John are against it, its a fair bet there’s something more sinister than the power-boost Kyle got. It looks like Boddika certainly is one of them. Will all the Lost Lanterns become Alpha Lanterns? I can’t see Arisia being involved (and she’s part of the GLC title anyway).

I’m unsure what to make of the GLC solicit to be honest. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it’ll be a good story, and there’s only so much you can tell for a solicit, so there are a lot of assumptions involved. However, the image of Mongul with a Sinestro ring does automatically make me wonder how many GL foes are going to end up in the Sinestro Corps. I can’t help but think its possibly going to be too soon after the event to revisit it, and a couple of issues dealing with something else (or the fallout from the war in another way that doesn’t involve actually bumping into someone with a yellow ring) might’ve been an idea.
I suspect I’ll be eating those words come January though
Various other non-GL things catch my eye as well. I’ve enjoyed the first two issues of Countdown to Adventure a lot, so I’m looking forward to it. I notice that Adam Strange seems to be in his original outfit, as opposed to his Planet Heist makeover, so I presume he has to dig some of his old kit out of storage at somepoint. I hope he gets his Planet Heist look back at the end of the series though. A really good updating I thought.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the Black Adam mini wraps up and I’ve been enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. I’m hoping it gives us some indication of why Adam’s powers seem to be driving Mary evil, and I can’t help but think something happens to his powers during this series that leads him to give them to Mary as an act of revenge against Billy.
Booster Gold #6 should be a good issue as well. I like how they’re dealing with the issue of Ted in this first arc and getting it out of the way. I don’t think anyone’s actually been expecting him to save Ted though, so I suspect this issue will be a bit of a tearjerker.

I’m wondering what this Alpha Lantern experiment of the Guardians will do to their minds. Looking at Boddika’s face, which has always been human in nature and her expression has always reflected her warrior mentality, I worry about the effects of this on the Alpha Lanterns. If they are to be infused with a similar power to the Ion entity, why has Boddika’s face changed into a face alien to that of her race, lack of nose etc, ? (no pun or reference or extra-terrestrials intended)
I hadn’t even noticed her face
Its a good point. The face seems to point to some kind of radical changes in the Alpha Lanterns. Which would at least partly explain why Hal and John are so suspicious of the process.
I hope Kyle and Guy at least get a cameo/namecheck in this. It seems like a big thing to be happening and only Hal & John care about it. Especially with Kyle and Guy operating out of Oa.
Of course, it could just as easily be that they’re away on some extended mission somewhere when this arc happens…
Just a pity that its so long till we find out
I’m wondering how other Lanterns may react to this. If not all the Lost Lanterns become Alpha Lanterns, then will they react to the changes in Boddika? Will her fierce and ungiving personality change to a cold one? How will Kilowog react? What if Kilowog is chosen to BE one, and chickens out after seeing Boddika? Actually, thinking about it as I’m typing, if the Guardians have chosen Boddika to be an Alpha Lantern, Kilowog, in my opinion, would be an ideal choice to be one as well.
He is a seasoned veteran, like Boddika, is well used to having and controlling vast amounts of power (dark Lantern), and is extremely loyal to the Corps and the Guardians. (Although when he finds out about the treatment of Ganthet I suspect his opinions may change. I think this mainly because when he was rescued by Kyle from death, and became alive again, he stayed on Oa. Which means he would have interacted with Ganthet on a daily basis, and the Guardian was a lot less cold and unemotional during those issues. (in fact, on that very issue, when Kyle flies through the portal to save Kilowog from Bolovaxian Hell, Ganthet mutters ‘Godspeed boy’ after the portal closes, which was weird for him.))
Not to mention the GL fan uproar about Kilowog losing his individuality and mind to become a fearsome and cold Alpha Lantern.
=o How will Mogo react?
Mogo has always cared about his fellow corps members, to the point where he actually counsels them using his illusions and such. If Kilowog goes near, or on, Mogo, how will Mogo react to the difference in Kilowog’s mind?
I’m really hoping that the Alpha Lanterns do have such a change in their minds now, it’d just be a brilliant plot twist, and a horrible shock to the corps of how little the Guardians care about the mental wellbeing of their corps. To show emotion over the negative aspects of an enhancement to one of their soldiers would be foolish to them. Especially if they gave the member a choice before making them an Alpha Lantern.
It depends on what the Guardians are up to I guess. If they view the Alpha Lanterns as an experiment, then Kilowog’s role as chief trainer may keep him safe.
As we’ve seen in previous issues, the Guardians are big on denying emotion at the moment, whereas Boddika has frequently allowed herself to be driven by her hatred of Hal. I wonder if being an Alpha Lantern means the Guardians will strip her of emotion. That’d freak Hal and John out no end.
I do wonder how the Ion entity will factor into this. I’m assuming it’ll be key to the Alpha Lantern process, although to be honest, its a retcon I’d rather forget about.
I agree, from the look of the Alpha Lantern uniform, that the Ion entity, or another like it, will be a large part of the Alpha Lantern process, but I agree that they retconned a concept (Starheart and Guardian willpower energy) that was already a good concept.
Unfortunately, since the concept of the ‘emotional spectrum’ doesn’t seem to be going away, in fact, since we have the Zamarons collecting power from each emotion, it seems to be a concept that has only just begun. And as Ion and Parallax have been retconned into sentient creatures of those powers I doubt they’ll be going away any time soon.
I must admit, I run hot and cold on the emotional spectrum idea myself. I’m intrigued enough to see where Johns takes it though. I do worry that its going to end up diluting the concept of the Green Lantern Corps though, with every colour having its own Corps.
I definitely prefered Ion as the combination of Starheart and Oan power though. It made Kyle a nice bridge between Alan and the Corps, which was fitting given his close relationship with Alan.
