Tales of the Sinestro Corps: IonRon Marz had mentioned online that the cover we’d seen for the Ion one-shot wasn’t going to be the final cover, but I don’t think anyone was expecting it to be done by Ed Benes. I guess that’s what happens when you’re the comics event of the summer :-D

I really love this new cover. Interestingly both Kyle and Sodam are wearing rings, although the glowing chest emblem on Sodam’s new suit does suggest he might still be the new Ion host? Possibly Kyle’s starheart powers are what allowed him to be ringless, and just being the host for the symbiote isn’t enough?

Possibly more likely though, while hosting the symbiote, the Guardians are tapping its power for the Alpha Lanterns.

Benes has really done a great job on Kyle’s new costume though. I love the raised texture he’s given to the chest logo. I must admit, I’ve found a lot of artists impressions of it lately had been putting me off it a bit, but it goes to show what a difference the artist can make. This is possibly my favourite version of it so far.

Ok, I’ll admit it. The way Kyle became a Green Lantern again, the parallel with Ganthet giving away ‘the last ring’ he’ll ever give to a GL (not he’s been expelled from the other Guardians), was good. I liked it. And I’m warming up to his costume, you’re completely right on how Benes has drawn it, the raised effect of the symbol is great.

What i want to know is, what on earth is Sodam wearing? And is that the Jim Lee GL symbol (altered a little as it’s more vertical)? Although I can’t really see the Jim Lee GL logo looking good in that circle on Kyle’s new suit, I don’t like what’s been done with Sodam. I really don’t want the Ion retcon to mean Kyle’s had Ion while he was in the Jim Lee costume, and that’s why his chest emblem always glowed. Because it doesn’t make sense of when he got it, and doesn’t explain why he was always powerless without his ring. Sure Ion may not have much power without a ring or the Starheart energy, like Parallax needed the Spectre or the Central Power Battery energy, but as creature of PURE willpower, surely he could’ve helped out a little whenever Kyle had his ring taken from him?

I quite like Kyle being a GL again, as I like the “4 Musketeers” concept Geoff Johns has brought to the Earth GLs. Its great seeing them as a team. I was resistant to Kyle stopping being Ion, just because Ron Marz had turned it into a great concept, and also because it means that Kyle’s been bounced around a bit. Heck, I was initially not keen on him becoming Ion again, largely because I thought he’d settled in nicely teaming with Guy in the GLC mini and saw it as an unnecessary change. Above all, I’m hoping the change back is going to be something that sticks for a good while.

From Sodam’s glowing chest emblem I’m going to take that as Kyle hosting the Ion whale ever since his first stint as Ion, although I’m wondering if Sodam also having a ring does indicate that just hosting Ion doesn’t necessarily boost the host’s power levels (other than boosting their willpower, which would in turn boost their ability with a GL ring).

Sodam’s costume looks awful, but I’ve only just now realised where I’ve seen his chest emblem before. Its the one used by Kyle in the JLU 2-parter “The Return”.

You’re right, I hadn’t noticed, it is from JLU.
I guess we’re always resistant to change, and the character’s being messed about, but we end up liking it after we’ve seen how the change is handled. …normally.
I’m wondering what will become of Ganthet now

Yup, we fans do get a bit protective :-)

Actually, the fans that scare me, are the ones who are going on about Kyle being shafted since Hal came back. From where I’m sitting:

Kyle was one of the main heroes in Rebirth. He was the one who discovered Parallax was back and rescued Jordan’s body. He also fought Sinestro with Ollie and (later) Hal, despite having to fight of Parallax’s influence.

He then got joint-lead in the GLC Recharge miniseries.

Then became a principle player in the Rann-Thanagar War miniseries and special.

From that he got his own 12 month maxi-series.

Which led straight into the Sinestro Corps event. Again, a major player (albeit evil and possessed for a large chunk of it), and has 2 one-shots he’s starring in.

Then he’s in Countdown every week, and the Search For Ray Palmer Specials.

Finally, joint-lead in the GLC ongoing.

Not bad for a character who’s been shafted ;-)

My only real complaint is the uncertainty brought in by changing his powers and identity. Now he’s back as a GL it looks like he’ll stay that way. And hopefully this costume will stick as well, just to provide some consistency.

And then hopefully they can turn their attention to John, who is probably the one GL who *was* shafted by Hal coming back :-)

Ganthet’s an interesting one. I can see him becoming more of a rogue element (I wonder what the other Guardians will think of him giving Kyle a ring). The Guardians for the most part seem to be ploughing on with their own agenda, losing sight of the bigger picture (notice that Ganthet twigged fairly quickly that the Sinestro Corps would head to Earth, not Oa). We still don’t know what Ganthet was trying to tell Salaak in the Sinestro Corps special. I love his character, so the idea of him being a rogue Guardian, sorting out their messes, and occassionally helping out the Earth GLs I like a lot.

An obvious answer would be for him to found one of the new Lantern Corps (blue or whatever), but I’d rather see him doing his own thing for a while.
