Green Lantern Corps #17 CoverOk, just some quick gut reactions to this issue before I read the Superman Prime special.

I’m routing for Superman/boy Prime in the fight against Ion.

Seriously, I knew it was coming. I even quite liked Yat in the last issue. But here he just really annoyed me. If they want to play him as an impetuous young lantern, then fine, but he’s being bigged up as a natural leader and “the bestest thing ever” at the same time. His rash decision to charge the Anti-Monitor cost GLs their lives, and he’s rewarded with even more power to mess up with.

Lets be honest, he’d be toast if he didn’t have Superman’s powers. All I saw was someone who was cocky and lucky. Not good. If that’s his character, then fine, but I’m not buying him as the new greatest GL ever. I can’t help but feel all the stuff with him and Ion is being crowbarred in at the last minute. If they really wanted to play up Sodam Yat, and build up to him becoming the new Ion, I can’t help but feel it should’ve been started a lot further back in this title.

Other than that, a good issue. I really enjoyed Kilowog vs Arkillo round 2. The several different artists was jarring however.

I’ll probably re-read it again tonight, and see how I feel about it on a second reading. It’ll be interesting as well to read it, and the previous issues of GLC back-to-back.

If Sodam was to become Ion, he should have earned the power as a reward after the trials of war. He is still a rookie, and unlike Kyle, is not experienced enough to handle such power, especially with Superman level physical power too!

  2. Alan says:

Yup. that’s why I wish he’d be introduced sooner in the GLC title. From what we’ve seen here, he’s an interesting enough character as a promising rookie, but we’re also told “He’s good. Good as most veterans” with even those veteran GLs naturally following his orders. Only to then have him pulling a hothead rookie routine, attacking the Anti-Monitor in a frankly bone-headed move that got two GLs killed, Natu injured and himself just about killed (he seems to have only survived as a result of the Guardians’ interferance).

He’s too scizophrenic a character for my tastes at the moment. He seems to be being played as a natural leader, but in this issue we see precious little reason for why any GLs would want to follow him. And we certainly don’t see him being “as good as most veterans” (frankly I got the impression he largely survived the attack on Ranx thanks to his Daxamite heritage).

Granted making him Ion seems to be a panic move by the Guardians. They’ve picked someone before they were ready to, and they needed a powerhouse to take down Superman Prime and the Anti-Monitor, so from that perspective, Yat is an understandable choice. But I don’t see that he’s ready for the power, and I expect to see him being humbled, or screwing up bigstyle soon.

It’ll be interesting to see how the character is used in the upcoming issues. Personally the writer seems to be shoving him into the “Ultimate GL” role before we’ve had a chance to see him earn that role and its not quite working for me. I’m hoping that they’ll do interesting stuff with him in future issues though. There’s a lot of potential for some good stuff with him having more power than he can handle, and also getting blind support from other GLs who he then gets into trouble.

I also note that he’s being consistently shown as still having a GL ring as Ion (in this, the Superman Prime special and the upcoming Ion cover). Looks like he’s not got the same kind of powers as Kyle did as Ion, which makes me wonder if that’s how the Starheart is going to be mentioned (Kyle has Starheart energy, so didn’t need a ring with the Ion powerboost, but Yat only has the Ion power and so needs a ring to access it).

Hmm… This does make me wonder why Kyle needed a power ring to have power after being freed from Parallax. I had wondered before why he couldn’t fight back at all, I mean I know the Starheart is not as powerful as the bloody Spectre, but he should have been able to put up some of a fight. Especially considering its ‘all the magic in the universe’ collected by The Guardians.

(Who really mucked up considering the amount of rampent magic thats always been on Earth, which is where the Starheart ended up too. Yup, thats Earth, magic HQ) But then… Ganthet is a Guardian of The Universe (or was..) and even he couldn’t resist Parallax. How did Parallax even take him over in Rebirth? Didn’t the Sinestro Corps Special establish that Sinestro had to make Kyle extremely afraid to make him vulnerable?

Anyway, I’ve rambled from my original intended point, Kyle has shown no instances of possessing the Starheart power. He didn’t even clothe himself when freed from Parallax and Guy had to give him a pair of boxers. (Which was very considerate when he could have just as easily ring formed him some real clothes. It wouldn’t have taken any longer, since they would’ve formed around him, since Kyle never seemed to have to physically put the boxers on.)

Why is Kyle not using his power?

    Yat is still a rookie.
He is undeserving of the Ion power!
    Die Sodam, just die.

  4. Alan says:

I’m wondering if both Ion and the Starheart provided him with power, but he needed the combination of the two to work without a ring. And in fairness, we do seem him fighting back against Parallax in GL #24 when his hand explodes out of Parallax’s mouth. Overall though, its something I would’ve liked to have seen being referenced more. The actual nature of Kyle’s Ion powers does seem to have gotten badly messed around as a result of the space whale being introduced.

Actually, thinking about it, while Kyle may still possess Starheart powers, he may not be able to access them without Ion. Jade had her power pulse, and Alan needs his ring to be able to use his powers, so its quite possible that Kyle couldn’t use them even if he wanted to.

Thank God Ron Marz will be giving them a nod in the special though (although I’m only expecting a throwaway line or two).

Regarding Parallax possessing Ganthet, perhaps Parallax had enough left over power absorbed from the Spectre which allowed him to do it?

  5. David says:

    Possible.

But as for Kyle’s hand, I thought that was just a ploy by Parallax, since when it tried to pull him in, we saw the hand was connected to Parallax, rather than being down his throat, or connected to Kyle. I’d assumed it was Parallax tricking the now powerless Hal (his ring charge ran out) to get close enough for Parallax to absorb him

  6. Alan says:

Hadn’t noticed that before. I’ve have to dig the issue out again tonight and take another look at it.

  7. David says:

I have another theory on the Starheart!

When Hal was Parallax, his energies were consistently green, this is both due to the fact that at the time, Hal was written to have absorbed the power of the central battery, and the yellow fear entity hadn’t yet been invented. When Parallax was altered to be a YELLOW fear entity, the only way they could really explain that was by making out that he had no real power of his own and needed it from a host’s fear (assuming his feeding on fear increased his power, it can be assumed that Parallax was incredibly strong before the Guardians trapped him), and drew his power from the central battery power, explaining well why Hal Parallax was consistently green.

When Parallax possessed Kyle, his only power source there was the Starheart energy, and so once again, rather than it being used by Kyle against him, (unlike the Spectre, who had a living mind, it wasn’t just power) he could draw off it, and use it in the same manner as he used Kyle’s body, and the central power battery energies. This explains very well why the energies he had as Kyle Parallax were green.

Why they became yellow when he absorbed Hal, I have a small working theory for. The colours are part of the ‘emotional spectrum’, and so the main power battery was just collected willpower and therefore green. Now, the Starheart wasn’t like this, it was just pure power. But it was also symbiotic in nature (with Alan anyway) and since Alan learned to command it using his willpower, he only focussed that power through that part of the emotional spectrum.

Now, the main power battery is collected willpower, and Parallax couldn’t just absorb and use it while he was trapped by it. It was opposite energy, thats why it was such an effective trap. But Hal, a human, could easily absorb and manipulate it, and Parallax possessed him to have a tool to manipulate that energy with. He couldn’t just keep it, he could only use the willpower energies through Hal. Theres no reason to assume the Starheart is the same. It is just power. And Parallax craves power. I see no reason why Parallax wouldn’t just keep that power, and leave Kyle without it.

This causes a new problem. Parallax is trapped by the collected willpower in the four power batteries. (Kyle’s is probably the strongest, being made from a piece of the original power battery rather than just tapping the new central power battery’s energy.) The willpower energy will trap him, as before. But thats not all Parallax is now. He has the Starheart (assuming this theory holds up). If he can’t use that to break out, I’m thinking he might try to use it to influence Alan Scott. I mean Alan’s lost a lot, most especially his daughter. He’s a man out of time, kept young by his own power, and can see the way society has become more fearful. Who else would have secret fears about what tomorrow may bring?
