Just for anyone that was wondering if I was still going to “re-spin” my Dr Who video :-)

I definitely am, but annoyingly the Nero project file had become corrupted. Originally I’d figured that I could fix a few of the pacing issues by re-juggling the existing clips, but with the project file dead, it meant I’m going to have to rebuild the whole thing from scratch.

Something that hasn’t been helped by Nero deciding to become very unstable on my home PC, and crashing constantly.

As a result, I’m taking the advantage to look into getting a proper movie editing package. I’m on a budget, but I’m currently looking at Ulead Video Studio 11, and I’ve downloaded the trial to see if it’ll be worth getting.

I’ve heard some god things about uLead, let me know if it is any good. I’ve been thinking about making a Jekyll video, and I’ve got avis now for every episode…

Glad to hear you’re working on your Doctor Who one again, looking forward to seeing the completed video. =]

A Jekyll video would definitely be worth seeing. :-D I’ve really got to get the DVD of that show.

Had a very quick shot of Ulead last night (power cut annoyingly knocked out my house for most of the night), and it seems pretty good. The trial version is fully featured for 30 days as well, which is pretty good. The only issue I’ve got at the moment, is that the preview pane doesn’t render the videos properly (looks like a problem with the colour settings), however the clips themselves are rendered fine when you export them.

I’ll be glad to get the video redrafted though. I’ve already started work on rejigging the intro (before the music hits), which always bugged me. I went through a few iterations of it before I just decided to leave it alone and focus on the rest of the video. This time, I think the concept for it is much better.

Plus I’ve now got Time Crash, so I can work in some of that footage :-D

Nice, I look forward to seeing the next version =]

I know this is pretty offtopic, but on the chance that you’ve been reading Countdown to Mystery (and if you haven’t, I recommend it, this Doctor Fate is very interesting so far), it seems from the DC cover previews of upcoming issues that Eclipso will be returning to her/his original look in the body Bruce Gordon. What are your thoughts on that? I really grew to like the female Eclipso’s style and overall look. (Drawn brilliantly in Countdown to Mystery)

  4. Alan says:

No such thing as off-topic here ;-)

I must admit, I’ve not been reading it. I picked up the first issue, but avoided the rest to save money (although I quite liked the idea of the down-and-out Dr Fate).

Glad to hear its a good series though. I’ve been wondering just how well the magical side of the DCU has been dealt with post-IC, what with all the fuss about the new age of magic, and then the dismal flop relaunch of the Shazam family.

Eclipso returning to his (?) original look is interesting though. I quite liked having a high-profile female villain kicking about, but given that Eclipso’s current host is Jean Loring, I wonder if it’s going to tie into the Search for Ray Palmer?

  5. David says:

The state of magic now is still being pretty vague, but Fate still seems pretty powerful.

Countdown to Mystery works as a dual story, the first about Doctor Fate, and the second about Eclipso, and the Spectre. While Fate gets off the ground with a pretty bogstandard villain and first foe (but still pretty good), the Eclipso stories have been intriguing, and tying (like a lot of stories lately) back to Darkseid. It also explains nicely while Eclipso is working for Darkseid in Countdown. Darkseid’s minions save her from space, and Darkseid tells her that the black diamond, which Eclipso’s spirit it forever trapped in, was mined on Apokolips. She tries possessing him, but fails, and ultimately ends up working for him as the ‘temptress’ of the DCU. Causing doubts and darkness everywhere.

    I hadn’t really made the connection to The Search For Ray Palmer, which makes me feel stupid now -_-;;

Tommorrow I’ll be buying the next Countdown to Mystery, and I’ll know more. =]

A few things I’m also chuffed about in the Countdown to Mystery series is,

    1) They called it the TENTH age of magic, like it was called in Day of Vengeance. Which is correct. I noticed (can’t remember what in, I think it was Shadowpact) that its been referrered to as the ninth lately. Which is wrong.

    2) A very small detail. As they like to, when revamping a character, they’ve altered the look of his speech bubbles. But unlike what they do sometimes, in the flash back, the helmet of Fate retained the old version. Small detail, but good to have right.

I did notice issue 3 when I was in the local Forbidden Planet yesterday (urgh, the Christmas crowds are gathering in that place). Was going to nab it and issue 2, when I realised I couldn’t remember half of the first issue, so I think I’ll dig it out first, to jog my memory, and then nab issues one and two.

The good thing about Countdown to Mystery (and Adventure) is that, being limited series I’m more inclined to pick them up, versus ongoings. Ron Marz once suggested on the Comic Bloc that the ideal form for comics would be to move away from ongoing monthly books, and adopt a more TV-style “season” structure (probably similar to the way Marvel handles the Ultimates). I can’t help but think he might’ve been onto something.

The script thing is a really nice touch. Its always a good reflection on the creative team when they throw in things like that. I think it helps show their care of the character.

  7. David says:

Its a good idea, but the problem with ’season’ structured comic releases like the Ultimates always leave you wanting more.

Imagine an ongoing Doctor Who o.o -Dreams-
Although I’m almost sure the quality would suffer.

Are the Christmas crowds invading already? Oh god…

I’m almost frightened to go Forbidden Planet now… x]

Hmm… though… Getting them today, rather than tommorrow, a weekend day, would be easier, right?

…Unless the crowds have the same idea…

    I can’t win… =[

  8. Alan says:

To be honest, quality is one reason I’m in favour of the so-called “Gap Year” Dr Who’s taking in 2009. I’d rather they just did a few specials that year if it meant it gave the team some time out, and resulted in stronger episodes in 2010.

The Glasgow Forbidden Planet is way too small to cope with the usual crowds, let alone the Christmas ones, so its always a nightmare. Hopefully it’ll be ok tonight though, as I only remembered today that the Gotham By Gaslight issue of the Search for Ray Palmer is out. Gotta get me some of that Greg Tocchini art :-D
