Green Lantern #25 CoverSo I’ve just finished reading the finale to the Sinestro Corps.

Wow.

There’s a heck of a lot of action in this finale. On one front we’ve got Kyle and Hal in Coast City facing off against Sinestro, while John and Guy join the main conflict in New York, as seen in the GLC title, facing off against Prime and the Anti-Monitor.

Geoff Johns had a lot to juggle in this book, and he’s pulled it off beautifully. There’s a lot of splash pages throughout to help convey the scope of the conflict, and Ivan Reis and Ethan Van Skiver really shine, packing in loads of detail into them. After reading this, its no wonder that Ivan’s taking the next arc off. Presumably to encase his hands in ice.

All the major plot points are dealt with really well. Most of the major threats are removed from the game, with the Sinestro Corps now leaderless, and minus their main power battery.

There’s some nice epilogue stuff as well, hinting at what’s to come. The final fate of the Anti-Monitor is a big surprise. Ever since he got involved, it was assumed that it would be a setup for Final Crisis. Now it looks like he might’ve been a red-herring in that department.
Tales of the Sinestro Corps: Ion
Then we’ve got the first of the epilogues. Ron Marz returns to wrap up the loose ends from his Ion series, and with some neat lines of dialogue, he manages to tie up a lot of the chaos caused by the rug being pulled from under him in that series. Jade’s power is mentioned, but to my mind is still a bit of a dangling plot thread. If another writer wanted to explore the idea of Kyle still possessing Starheart energy, there’s nothing here to stop it, but for now I’m happy to assume its dormant within him.

Kyle still gets his due from the Guardians, which is nice, and there’s a great scene with the 4 Earth GL’s which re-establishes the Kyle/Guy banter which we’ll hopefully see more of in the GLC monthly.

I’ve still got GLC #19 to read, but I must admit, so far this has been an excellent week for Green Lantern fans (if an expensive one).

    I’ve read it now!

    Wow.

…That was…. not very much like what I expected.

    It was so much better.

I love the development of Ganthet and Sayd and I’m looking forward to the Blackest Night. (The design of the black rings is the front of Black Hand’s costume interestingly)

Though I fear the GL Corps will lose it’s uniqueness with all these corps.

Love the blue lantern symbol though.

I was surprised how much it built up the next part of the trilogy, but Johns interweaved that, and wrapped up the Sinestro Corps brilliantly I thought.

I’d also missed Black Hand ranting about the Blackest Night way back in the first arc as well. It seems Geoff Johns has been building up to this for longer than we though :-) (although I hear that’s very much a trademark with his stuff)

And far from losing the pace, I see that after Alpha Lanterns, its straight into the Red Lanterns arc, so I don’t think the pace will be slowing down much at all.

I agree that it does make the GLs less unique, but I suspect that by the end of the Blackest night we’ll be left with just the GLs again. I do wonder if the GL Corps will become unique within its role, rather than its powers though.

I’m very intrigued by the Blue Corps stuff though. Ganthet running his own Corps is a really nice idea, and given they inspire hope, I wonder if they’ll be setup more to compliment the GLs, rather than as “another Corps doing its own thing”.

Looks to be an exciting 18 months though.

I’m looking forward to the responce of the Guardians when they find blue rings flying about various sectors, and you’re right, it doesn’t look to be slowing down. God I love Geoff right about now. It’s a good day to be a Green Lantern fan.

I have to say though, a fire has lit in my mind in regards to the Blackest Night and the dead rising. Geoff, as you’ve said, likes to thread everything together in a tapestry where you can see little things from the past tying into now and all making sense. Geoff is the master of pressing all the right buttons, and what is another button he’s been pressing often in the GL series. Hal’s father.

Geoff has continuously referenced Hal Jordan’s father and now, with the dead rising for the Blackest Night, who best to rise and freak out Hal than dear old Dad?

It’s a good day to be a Green Lantern fan, mate. A very good day. =]

Oh yes. Around the time of Rebirth it was stated that the aim was to turn GL into DC’s fourth biggest franchise (just behind Supes, Bats and WW). There’s no doubt that this is the year it happened.

I hadn’t even thought about Hal’s Dad featuring in the Blackest Night, but now I think about it it makes so much sense. Geoff’s made Hal’s relationship’s with his family at the core of the new series, and his Dad’s final words are something that was left hanging at the end of the SCW. I think you’re right, and his Dad’s going to tie into the Blackest Night in some way.

With the Alpha and Red Lanterns up and coming in GL, and the hugely promising start to Peter Tomasi’s run on GLC, it looks like 2008 is going to continue to be another great year for GL fans.
