The mirror universe 2-parter was fanservice of the highest order, but yup, it was a great showing for the Constitution class :-D

If the spoilers about this movie are anything to go by, then Crisis might be the right word, since it sounds like we'll be ending up with the Star Trek equivalents of Earth-1 and Earth-2.

...
Sod it.
Let's have a Crisis.
That solves EVERYTHING.
=D

...Actually.
Now that I just thought about that.
How cool would it be to see Starfleet ships attacking a giant Anti-Monitor?

...Throw in a few Borg cubes.

And yes.
I bloody loved that two parter.

Really showed how amazing constitution class ships can be. ^^

The general asthetic is definitely hard to resolve with the original series. This film seems to be very much a reinvention of those familiar things, with (from what we've seen) only the uniforms a true nod to the original.

For myself, I'm not too worried if it looks really different to what's come before in terms of the technology. Its a hard one to balance. On one hand, if you're being true to continuity it has to end up looking like the 1960's designs. But on the other, the truth probably is that those designs would look jarring in a modern movie (although I admit, I lapped up the mirror universe 2-parter in Enterprise). People are used to seeing all manner of touchscreen technology from films like Minority Report, The Island and Quantum of Solace. If Star Trek is to be believably set in the future, then the ships technology has to suddenly jump ahead of what it should be, in order to serve the modern audience.

In this case, I do have the worry that the attempt to make the film more paletable to the fans, and make it work within existing canon, could either help or hinder it. We know that time travel's involved, so possibly the Romulan involvement causes technology to jump farther ahead than it should of. However, perhaps it would've been cleaner to just leave the time travel out and say "its a reboot, deal with it" a la Galactica.

Heck, maybe its all Enterprise's fault. We know that the Temporal Cold War mucked things up (for one example the Klingon landing on Earth in the pilot brought forward first contact between humans and Klingons. For another, the humans encounter Future Guy's Suliban cohorts, who use cloaked ships. Yet Kirk was surprised by the cloaked Romulan ship in Balance of Terror, as it was a new technology). Maybe we're seeing the after effects of the temporal cold war, and hence why all the technology has jumped ahead. Maybe Eric Bana's Nero could turn out to be Future Guy :-D

Not a chance that'll be in the film, but if its not contradicted, I may have just rambled my way into my own personal explanation for that storyline :-)

Although at first glance I'm not all that fond of the look of the new bridge, I concur with needing to see more of it before making a full judgement. All Starfleet ships, even before Kirk's ship (As established by Enterprise) have had a similar, circular design. We've only seen a single image, one angle. We don't know how it all looks together, from a bird's eye view.

My initial impressions aren't all that positive, as it feels too big to be an earlier version of Kirk's first Enterprise (Or Pike's if we want to be really picky) and I'm not sure what I think of that strange pedestal with the woman ensign behind it. It just feels wrong there, and the technology feels wrong too. I mean she's holding a stylus. That implies touchscreen technology. I know we had this in the Enterprise D, but this is set before the first show, it just feels too advanced. I realise it IS a few hundred years from now, and the original show's technology did look a little antiquated for supposedly 23rd century tech, they should at least pay homage to it.

The colour schemes, the technology, it just doesn't feel like the Enterprise. Nice to see the uniforms resembling the show's though.
