Ok, so it actually leaked a couple of days ago, but last night saw the new trailer for Star Trek hit apple.com in glorious HD, allowing us to get our first proper look at the film.

I’m officially getting excited now, and more annoyed than ever that its been held back until next summer. Its a great trailer, and I must admit, while a lot of attention has (rightly) been given to the near-perfect casting of Zachary Quinto as Spock, I’m really liking the look of Chris Pine as Kirk. If you’d asked me a year ago I’d have probably been very dubious about a new Trek film recasting the classic roles (although don’t get me wrong, from a mass market point of view, I very much understand the reasons for doing so), but I think this could really work. If I have any complaints, its that I would’ve liked to see a bit more of Karl Urban’s McCoy in the trailer (and Simon Pegg’s Scotty), but really, the focus had to be on Kirk and Spock for the first trailer, so I’m hoping to see more of them in later trailers (heck, we’ve still got about 6 months of hype that’s only just starting).

As predicted, the brief glimpses of the new Enterprise we get look good. And I love that shot of Kirk finding the half-constructed ship and looking up at it. That’s pretty iconic. I think the bridge is looking a lot better as well. I’m still not completely sold on the style, but at least its recognisable in terms of its layout.

Trailer has me really excited, looks like there are some good ideas here, the looking up at a half constructed enterprise could almost be seen as Kirk meeting his first love.

I actually think JJ may be getting some good fan service in without alienating casual viewers. Rumour is the shot of kirk snoggings oem girl is how he gets access to re-programme the Kobyashi Maru simulation, and if we see how he reprogrammed it I hope they keep the version from the book “The Kobyashi Maru” as it is just so Kirk.

Peggs scottish accent isn’t too bad.

Oh as an addition, I know Pike is teh captain at the beginning of the movie, wonder if he will be hideously burned and have to spend the rest of his life in a beepy chair in the movie, see stuff like that would make for a good reason as to why pike is out the picture, and its a good fan reference

I wonder if there will be any time skipping because we see the Enterprise being constructed, as it’s always been implied that Pike commanded the ship for at least a year, we know Kirk takes command of the ship during the movie by his uniform, so I hope Pike’s length of command isn’t retconned to an hour’s worth. =/

Loving the new trailer, though I felt the beginning of it was too action based, and I can’t help but wonder why James has a fossel fuel driven motorbike when it should be a few centuries old by now. I doubt he could have had one built for him considering they’ve moved on to less damaging power sources by this time.

Unless it’s smoke trail was simulated.

Simon Pegg’s ‘Scotty accent’ was pretty cool.
And though I’m not completely sold on Zachary Quinto as Spock, I have to admit, he bloody looks the part.

Oh yes, he looks the part. And hopefully doesn’t play him too sylar.

My thought is that kirk has an affinity for antique thrill seeking vehicles, since he trashes what looks like a really nice corvette in the opening of the trailer. I’m guessing we’re meant to ge the idea that this is a young, irresponsible Kirk.

As for Pike, I read somewhere that his command lasted for up to 10 years, it coudl be re-written that he’s been in command of the Enterprise for some time, making Kirk very much the new boy in an established crew, probably why there are conflicts with Spock.

I’m placing money on Pike managing to get himself captured or trapped. That leaves Kirk free to Captain the ship, but rescues Pike and hands it back at the end of the film. Kirk can then head off to the Farragut for a few years before getting handed the Enterprise.

I’m also assuming there’s some time jumping going on. From the scenes that’ve already been shown, Kirk’s talked into joining the academy by Pike (I’m assuming around the same time as he sees the Ent under construction). He can then spend a few years in the academy before the events of the film. There must be a bit where there’s a “5 years later” or similar.

Completely agree about keeping the events of the Kobyashi Maru from the novel. That was a hoot. I really hope they don’t change it

They kept it for the Starfleet academy games as I recall, or something similar (“THE Captain Kirk?”)

Thats a pretty good idea, but it does put kirk in a funny place experience-wise in comparison with Sulu, checkhov and Uhura. I coudl understand him being promoted to command ahead of Spock, Bones or Scotty, as none of them are of the command discapline.

It will be interesting how they reconcile the time jumps, specifically how kirk can go from a Lieutenant fresh from teh Academy to a captain (Commander’s rank, pah, I’m captain Kirk)

True, having Kirk in the academy at the same time as everyone else, does throw up some issues. Although its always been accepted canon (I think), that Kirk managed to get the Captain rank at a young age, so that would explain how he ends up ahead of the other guys.

Of course, this is also a new continuity. So whereas in the original films Sulu didn’t become a Captain until…well open to debate, but we’ll say Undiscovered Country, since that’s what’s on screen, perhaps in this new continuity Sulu ends up with a ship of his own much earlier. Also its possible in the original continuity, Kirk entered the academy a couple of years earlier.

Its also worth mentioning, that going by the various novels, nicking the Enterprise in Star Trek III did slow the careers of the involved bridge officers (Sulu had been lined up with the Excelsior prior to those events for example), so it does probably all work out in the end.
