Torchwood: Children of Earth – Day 5

11 July, 2009 (23:53) | Television | By: Alan

Torchwood Gwen and the kids runningIn truth, I’m not really sure what to say about Day 5, as I’m still a bit shell-shocked.

It was brilliant though, no doubt about that.  Even at its best, I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted exactly how good Torchwood could be.   Children of Earth has been a standout piece of television, and people will be talking about it for a long while to come.

It was harrowing viewing.   With the Government stealing away people’s children, Frobisher’s fate, and ultimately Jack’s hard choice to save everyone, it was difficult to feel comfortable watching.   Gone was the safe, cosy world of Torchwood.  There were no punch-the-air moments here.  The human race may have been ultimately saved, but the price was heavy.   Frankly, if this was the last Torchwood ever, it’d be a heckuva high to go out on (its unlikely though.  After how well this has done, I can’t see the Beeb not making a fourth season).  It was outstanding work from all involved, and after the last few Doctor Who’s being more of a romp, Russell T Davies reminded us just how good a writer he can be.

Presuming Jack does turn up in Tennant’s finale episodes, I wonder how they’ll address Jack having left Earth.  Or will the finale allow them to write around the events of Torchwood?

Really enjoyed this, but i agree, seemed like an end to Torchwood. Only thing could be having Jack return, or Gwen rebuild Torchwood in his abscence (Possibly recruiting Micky and Martha as was rumoured for thsi series)

Either way, shows what Torchwood should have been from day 1. Shame to end it all now.

Can’t see it ending after being this popular. Although creatively it would definitely make sense to go out on this kind of high.

For a potential fourth series, I think I’d like to see either, Gwen rebuilding Torchwood on her own, with Jack turning up later on. Or alternatively it’d be a prime opportunity to properly visit Torchwood 2, which was mentioned in the pilot and then never came up again (the one based in Glasgow). You could have them turning up and taking over, leading to conflict with Gwen.

Or, my other idea would be to do a series of adventures set though Jack’s time in torchwood, seeing the various incarnations over teh years woudl be fun.
